"I was absolutely blown away by how the S.200 handled the Red Bull Hardline course and the confidence it gave me." Gee Atherton

Fresh on the heels of Gee Atherton’s impressive Finals run at last week’s Red Bull Hardline, Atherton Bikes has opened sales on its e-commerce site with full build prices from £4999 and the promise that the S.200 also brings the goods in the park.

The S.200 offers all the race heritage you’d expect from a family who dominated the world DH stage for 20 years and its lug and tube construction in aluminium (patent pending) builds upon the learnings from their World Champs-winning A.200. Dave Weagle’s World-Cup proven DW4 suspension platform offers high performance with low maintenance in keeping with the S-Series' “chuck it in the van and go” vibe. The S.200 has already demonstrated its strength, speed and stability on the race track but it’s just as at home on the jumps and berms of the Bike Park where it feels poppy but super-forgiving.

Dan, Gee and Rachel all put the laps in during development and were super-impressed with how sprightly the bike rides…

The S.200 at Hardline

Gee said “I was absolutely blown away by how the S.200 handled the Red Bull Hardline course and the confidence it gave me. Knowing how strong the bike is meant I could be really brave on it. It felt like a really good all-round bike and that showed up in its ability to be within a couple of % of the winning pace.… but it’s probably my new favourite bike to ride in the park too, designed with some extra pop and sharper handling. Some of my best days riding this winter have been on this bike!”

About the S.200

The S.200 has a mixed wheel configuration and 200 mm travel in the front and rear.  It comes in 12 standard sizes, and the combination of Atherton’s “perfect-fit" sizing with the DW4 suspension platform and the precise attention the team gave to the compliance on the S.200’s single piece CNC'd rear triangle make this a playful and confidence-inspiring ride from the very first lap.

In common with the entire Atherton range, the S.200 is “Built Different”. The new DH bike is built in Machynlleth, Mid Wales and comes with all the attention to detail you would expect from a British-built bike produced by the Atherton family.

It is constructed from Aluminium 7075 using subtractive manufacturing, custom drawn 7075 aluminium tubes are joined to CNC manufactured lugs using insanely strong double lap shear joints. Because Atherton bonds rather than welds their frames, they can use 7075 Aluminium, which has 70% higher fatigue performance and 70% higher ultimate tensile strength (UTS) compared to weldable alternatives (i.e. 6061 Aluminium). The lifetime warranty means no worries as you send everything in sight!

Continental Atherton’s Chief Technician Ben Lovell was one of the chief testers for the S.200, he said “If I was spending my own money on a bike, this is the one I would choose. Despite my job, I’m more of a park rat. the S.200 excels there, but I still want to be up there and competitive when I put a number board on. The S.200 comes with so much Atherton race pedigree, and it’s a head-turner in all the best ways. I would 100% recommend.”

Speeds were high… 80km through the speed trap and racing was super tight, with Jackson Goldstone taking the win by the smallest margin in Hardline history. Gee and the S.200 were well up to pace, especially in the rapid bottom sector of the track just 1.05 off Asa Vermette’s fastest 4th sector time.

“Very excited, stoked to be riding the S.200 here at Hardline, obviously we know how capable the bike is from testing but this is the first time it will have to prove itself on anything as hard as this. The track is a real mix of big hits, huge gaps and high-speed tech as well as small, rough choppy sections where you need a lot of traction so it will test almost everything on the bike. Settings are a bit of a mix, hard to say we’re going to have to adjust as we go but it will have to balance being comfortable at high speeds but holding up on the big long stretches over the drops and the jumps.”
