EU Exports - Atherton Bikes
27 March 2025
Post 2020 and Brexit (sorry!) there was a moment of uncertainty when a host of new regulations looked set to seriously deter European buyers, even our friends in the European press were uncertain about the implications for pricing.
But huge thanks to our intrepid customers who took the plunge and ordered anyway. Together, we’ve proved that the process is simple, and it can even result in customer savings (especially in Switzerland), which is reflected in the fact that 33% of our 2024 sales came from Europe.
Certificate of UK Origin
The path to a smooth import process is paved by our Certificate of UK Origin which applies to all Atherton models and means that your bike or frame will be exempt from any import duty. Our Euro prices (on the website, or invoice) exclude UK VAT at 20% but you’ll likely be liable for your local sales tax (usually paid at the port) and sometimes a minimal handling fee. We ship with DHL, we don’t mark up their charges and we constantly negotiate to make sure you have the best possible deal for delivery.

Collecting from HQ
There is one scenario that’s potentially less smooth than previously, and that’s if EU customers want to collect from the factory. Lots of you do, and we love showing you around, but legally, if you collect your bike in the UK, we have to charge 20% UK VAT.
That used to be refundable at the port, but Brexit has removed this option, so you’re at risk of paying two sets of sales tax.
Still, some of our new owners can’t resist the chance to take their brand-new bikes for Christening laps at Dyfi Bike Park. But don’t just take our word for it, some of our customers share their experiences here…
Shipping Atherton Bikes to Switzerland
Rene Bought: A.130 full-bike 2022 and S.170 frame 2024
“Usually there is the VAT of currently 8.1% plus a small handling fee of around 30 bucks. That was big saving for me compared to the UK price. In the normal way of things this is handled through the carrier, for my S.170 I paid CHF 261 via DHL. It was a very smooth process with no hold-ups."
Shipping Atherton Bikes to Germany
Axel: Bought: S.170 frame
“My frame was sent via DHL Express to Munich, I paid 0% import tax (thanks to your certificate of origin), 19% German VAT and a negligible import handling cost of around 12 euros. My experience was very smooth. ”
Stefan: Bought A.170.3
“My frame was shipped via DHL Express to Germany, 0% import tax ( thanks to your certificate of origin) and 19% VAT. I was requested by Customs to provide evidence of payment and my origin invoice, which the Atherton Bikes team supported, so that went quite well! (I was a bit worried that the complete bike might cause discussions due to its add-on parts, but that wasn't the case).
Shipping Atherton Bikes to France
Julien, Bought: S.170 frame
“I purchased the frame on the official Atherton website at the Euro price excluding tax. Once shipped, I received a DHL tracking email. When the frame arrived at Charles de Gaulle Airport in Paris, I was contacted by email by DHL to pay the tax (VAT) applicable in my country, which is 20% of the value of the item.
There was no import duty but I had to pay an additional customs clearance fee of approximately €150. I was able to pay this amount via a secure payment link by email, and once the payment was made, the delivery continued to my home. The entire purchase process went very smoothly and easily."

S Range
Our new S Range also uses lug and tube construction and builds upon these learnings with similar geometry, chassis compliance and strength characteristics. Shipping Atherton Bikes to Sweden
Tommy Resin, Bought: S.170 frame
After 30 years of mountain biking, I’ve had many bikes—but importing my Atherton S170 from Wales to Sweden was truly exceptional. From day one, the Atherton team offered outstanding support, guiding me through components, sizing, and setup to ensure a perfect fit.
Their personal approach made the process smooth and stress-free. Shipping was flawless!
The bike was securely packed, delivered on time, and arrived in perfect condition. Plus, with the Certificate of UK Origin, I avoided import duty, making everything even easier. If you're considering an Atherton, I can’t recommend them enough—amazing bikes, top-notch service, and a seamless experience from start to finish!
Shipping Atherton Bikes to Norway
Per Erlend Hasvold, Bought: A.170.2
Ordered an AM 170.2 build with some Hope components but without wheels as I had ordered those prior to the finalization of the purchase. Sent to Tromsø in the north of Norway.
0% import tax on bikes, but 25% VAT on value of bike + shipment to Norway. Important to be aware that shipment is included in the sum used to calculate VAT. This is normal for international imports to Norway. Total shipment time was almost two weeks, I think. That is also usual as the transport to the north takes up to five working days. No issues, very smooth experience.
